Over the past week or so we have talked about Repellem Ponchos, lawn and leaf bags, we threw in some global warming, added a touch of companies going green, and basically beat Global Warming with a stick. I like to mix things up here at Repellem so you don’t get the same meal served to you everyday. Our repellent is made from all natural ingredients, or bags are biodegradable, so you can see why we are all about the environment.
Today I want to dip into what we are feeding our kids. A new book by Dr. Alan Greene (that just can’t be his real name right? I mean it’s too big a coincidence.) entitled Raising Baby Green (see he’s even thrown his name into the title). In this book the Greene a Pediatrician by trade, layouts 5 foods that every family should be buying organically.
Why only five? Well in case you haven’t checked out the price eating only organic lately, it’s not cheap. So Greene comes up with a way to limit your kids exposure to the chemicals that swim in our foods by focusing on the ones we eat the most of.
The book suggest that staple foods milk, potatoes, peanut butter, ketchup, and apples all be bought from organic suppliers. Check out these statics and you will understand the doc’s recommendations:
Milk- 30% of samples from a recent survey contained high levels of pesticides
Potatoes- 81% still contain pesticides after being scrubbed and peeled.
Peanut Butter-99% of peanuts come from farms where using pesticides are common place
Ketchup- let’s face it, Ketchup is the only vegetable kids care to eat
Apples- Apples are to fruit what ketchup is too vegetables. Often they are at every meal and are the first thing they eat.
Overall I really like this list. Greene is right on the mark about how going organic can be way to pricey for a family trying to make it on a budget. By pushing the five most consumed foods mom’s and dad’ all over can go green without the guilt
