All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

I understand that hunting is a part of life. I like a big juice steak just like the next guy and I’m not naive enough not to know how that tender piece of cow got on my plate. In order to eat we must grow and hunt for our food. What I don’t understand is how somebody could throw away any and all regard for the laws of the land and go after an animal on the endangered species list. As is the case with an endangered gray wolf found in eastern Oregon. Now a group calling themselves Oregon Wild, the Center For Biological Diversity, and The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have gotten together to offer a reward of $9000 to anyone who successfully helps catch the person responsible for this crime against nature.

In a recent statement Oregon Wild’s director Steve Pedery said “The killing of endangered wildlife like this wolf is a crime against Oregon’s children. Wolves are the icons of American wilderness, and we hope this reward will produce information that leads to the arrest and conviction of whoever committed this crime.” The wolf of course is one of the greatest living embodiments of the West and has been on the endangered species list since 1974. They were originally put under government protection after a period of 35 years in which wolves were considered dangerous threats to the population and consequentially slaughtered in the name of “Protecting the peace”.

Over the past year President Bush has come under fir for his administrations effort to take the wolf off the endangered species list, which would thus open them up to hunters everywhere. While the gray wolf population has increased in states like Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana numbers in Oregon are still not where some feel they need to be, “Wolf recovery could be a great American conservation success story, like the bald eagle. But they need time and continued legal protection, especially here in Oregon. Our grandchildren deserve a chance to hear the howl of a wolf echo across places like the Eagle Caps Wilderness, and we should act today to ensure that they have it” says Pedery
