Meet Linny, Tuck, and Min-Ming too, their the Wonder Pets and they’ll help you…to save the environment? In case you are not a frequent watcher of all things Noggin you probably haven’t heard about the newest sensation amount preschoolers called The Wonder Pets. Linny(the hamster), Tuck(the turtle), and Ming-Ming(the baby duck) are mild mannered pets living in a classroom by day, but as soon as school lets out they turn into heroes zooming all over the planet performing good deeds. Completely with a flyboat made from a frisbee and some markers, the Wonder Pets don’t actually have any superpowers. What they do have though is the power of teamwork and the ability to turn kids everywhere into zombies for half an hour.
As the father of a 1 1/2 yr old, watching cartoons comes with the territory. Most are just fun and offer nill in the learning department, but their are a few such as Dora The Explorer, Blues Clues, and The Backyardigans that do a great job teaching the basics. The more I watch the Wonder Pets bounce around the globe though, the more I’m thinking that the cartoon is also teaching our children to be future greenies. For example in “Save The Tree”, the gang zooms off to a vacant lot in the middle of the city where a tree is about to loose it’s last leaf. By cleaning up the lot, adding some other plants, and making sure the tree has enough water the Wonder Pets are able to get the tree back on it’s feet. “Save The Dolphin” shows the dangers of net fishing by having the Lenny, Tuck, and Ming-Ming cut loose a baby dolphin that has gotten tangled in a fisherman’s net. “Save The Penguins” features a couple of baby penguins about to fall off a melting glacier.
In the past two seasons the Wonder Pets have saved chimps, elephants, puppies, skunks, pandas etc…and what do the Wonder Pets do after each rescue? They eat a piece of celery as a reward!!! Celery that has been grown at the schools community garden no doubt!! Now the creator of the show Josh Selig will not just come out and say it, but the Wonder Pets are obviously showing our children that life is about more than teamwork, sharing, and compromise. Life is about taking care of the world we live in. To that I say “GO WONDER PETS!!”
