Be Prepared For Severe Weather Before You Go Out On Your Next Camping Trip
Posted in Safety, Traveling, OutdoorsThe temperatures are rising all over the country and as a result families are gearing up for outdoor fun. It’s the perfect time of the year for camping, long walks along the countryside, and all day trips to the beach. Unfortunately with the sunny days and starry nights comes the increasing chance that you may be caught in the middle of a severe weather outbreak. Every year over 560 people are killed due to weather related emergencies. In 2006 alone total crop and property damage costs were well over $126 million dollars according to the National Weather Service.
Many of us are for the first time in months venturing outside ready to shake off winter and enjoy the sunshine for a change. This is the perfect time to go over some severe weather tips just in case we are faced with a tornado or thunderstorm when we least expect it:
- Remove dead or weak trees that might suffer damage from high winds.
- Secure outdoor equipment that might blow away.
- Check your camp for questionable structures that might be damaged in a storm.
- If you are in an open field, crouch down and place your hands on your knees. Only the soles of your feet should touch the ground. Do not lie flat or kneel
- If you are swimming or boating, get out of the water and seek shelter immediately.
- If you are in a wooded area, crouch down near a thick growth of trees.
- Avoid tall structures, such as isolated trees or fire towers; they attract lightning.
- Stay away from golf clubs, fishing rods, bicycles, or camping equipment, which also attract lightning.
- Stay away from rivers and large bodies of water, which could flood
