Very rarely do I get to talk sports on this site, but the with the whole Michael Vick dog fighting scandal making headlines I feel I’ve got good reason. Why today and not when the story first broke last week? Well as of Wednesday one of NASCAR’s biggest stars and humanitarians stepped up to the microphone and stood up for animals-kind.
Encase you don’t have a clue what I’m talking about, Pro Quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons Michael Vick was recently indicted by the Feds for an alleged dog fighting ring that he ran out of his home in Virginia. Because of this disgusting inhumane practice, not only is Vick now facing up to six years in the pen, but he is practically being through off the Falcons for at least the 2007-2008 season if not forever.
Wednesday NASCAR driver Greg Biffle who is such an animal lover that he’s created the Greg Biffle Foundation for Animals, got thrown the question “What do you think about the recent charges against Michael Vick?” To which Greg said what millions of us around the world were thinking ourselves “I just wish they’d put him in jail and be done with it’ Biffle then went on to say discuss some of the specifics of dog fighting. How the dogs are tortured to make them mean. How they are often starved to the point that they are ready to resort to cannibalism. They are forced to where chains around their neck that are too heavy for them to lift so that they will build muscle due the constant strain of lifting their heads. How pets are being stolen in neighborhoods all across the country not to fight, but to serve as real life “tackling dummies”.
Biffle added, “It goes on everywhere. He’s not the only guy. It goes on in this state too (Michigan). Maybe they’ll use him as an example and maybe get some other people to think about whether they want to be in federal prison with him or not” The Greg Biffle Foundation for Animals is a regular contributor to local Humane Societies, helps with animal shelters, and finds homes for pets put up for adoption.
As for Vick? With endorsements such as the one for his own brand of Nike tennis shoe running away at full speed it’s a safe bet that this could be the final penalty in Vick’s all too short NFL career.
