First off I want to say that I understand there are people that depend on the killing of whales in order to supply food and money for their families. Still when I read the headline above I couldn’t help but be upset over such an injustice.
Reports are saying that a 50-ton bowhead whale was killed (caught) off the Alaskan coast and embedded in its neck was the 3 ½ inch tip of a lance. After some research it was determined that the arrow was made in Massachusetts sometime around 1890. The idea behind the weapon was that it would be filled with an explosive (most likely gunpowder) and once it struck it’s target the explosion would kill the animal (or mammal in this case). Something went wrong (or right) with this particular arrow and the whale lived another 36,500 or so days. Then suddenly while doing nothing but minding it’s own business the whale was again the victim of a hunter’s blade very similar to the one that struck it all those years ago, this time ending it’s chance of seeing it’s 200th birthday (there are documented cases of whales living 200 years or more).
Think of all the things that happened during this whales lifetime….the Civil War, World Wars I & II, Viruses were cured while others were created, humans landed on the moon, the invention the just about every form of transportation other than walking and using a horse, nuclear technologies, computers, presidents were assassinated and men of evil tried to destroy the world…all of this and that whale just kept swimming…kept living it’s life going about it’s business somehow surviving when nothing else around it could only to meet that hunter once again 100 years later.
