All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

Last week we discussed snakes, this week we’ve got bears; maybe I’ll just start picking an animal a week and start going over what to do vs what not to do. There’s a survival story making the news today which leads me to discuss bear survival techniques. It happened on Friday Oct 12th just outside White Haven, Pa. 14 year-old Chris Malasics was on a Boy Scout camping trip all snuggled up his tent all warm inside his sleeping bag, when out of know where (which is where most animal attacks come from) a bear decided Chris’s tent had room for two. The bear charged in and began attacking Chris who did his best to play dead while at the same time curled up in the fetal position.

The animal was finally driven thanks to the quick actions of fellow campers who began making as much noise as possible and flashing their car headlights. In Chris’s own words “I was just trying to figure out what to do to not get hurt”

Now obviously I wasn’t there, but you can almost bet the bear was poking around looking for a snack. It’s a campground, there’s the smell of grilled meat in the air, people are making smores, maybe some Jiffy Pop got popped. My point is those smells make the rounds in the middle of the woods and a bear could probably catch a whiff from quite a good distance away.

What can be done to help deter or mask the scrumptious smells coming from a campsite. Repellem Bags of course!! Now I hate sounding like a commercial, but these bags were specifically designed to deter animals. That means instead of wrapping that steak you are saving for the nights dinner in aluminum foil and keeping it in that old beat up cooler of yours, put it in a Repellem bag first. Not only does it prevent food smells from escaping, their red color makes them invisible to the low color spectrum of most animals.  What more should the Boys Scout have done to safe guard their campsite? Here’s a whole list of bear survival techniques.
