Anytime we the chance showcase a group of volunteers out there sacrificing their time and energy in order to help clean up the planet with the help of our fantastic bags, you can bet we’re going to take it. In particular today we are bragging about the amazing work being done by the folks from “Bring Back The Bayou”. Organized by Kurt Zuelsdorf and in association with Nature Matters the group turned out in Gulfport, Florida last Saturday in hopes of giving back to Mother Nature.
With kayakers from all over the area showing up at Clam Bayou, pretty soon all sorts of things were being pulled out of the water. “I believe we’re up to about 28 shopping carts, 7 bicycles, a motorcycle, sofa, lots of lawn furniture and lots of tables. We’ve removed over 20,000 pounds of garbage from our waterways” said Kurt.
Along with educating the public on keeping the environment clean for future generations, Bring Back The Bayou made sure they put the trash in Repellem bags knowing that unlike the over the counter brands, Repellem bags decompose within 5 years.
The South Florida Water Management District is sponsoring the clean up of the bayou. Clam Bayou was once a testament to the beauty of nature with dolphins, manatees, and other wildlife inhabiting the area. Over the past several years’ things have taken a drastic turn due to what some say is the dumping of waste from the local town of St. Petersburg. According to one news report “storm water from St. Petersburg has pushed mounds of trash, dirt and road grease into the bayou, which has left layers of sediment along the bottom and reduced the depth of the inlet to less than 3 feet in most areas during high tide.”
