In an effort to stay on the forefront of the Fast Food industry and in the minds of its consumers, Burger King announced today that it would begin buying from distributors of caged or crate free animals. Although there are no immediate plans to fully switch over all of their pork and egg purchases to these suppliers, at least 10% of the pork and 2% of the eggs are already being purchased with those number increasing by the end of 2007. The home of the Whopper also said it would begin giving favorable treatment to suppliers of caged free animals over those that often keep their pigs/chickens in metal or wooden crates.
In response to this announcement PETA (People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals) issued this statement:” We certainly hope that people will order the BK Veggie Burger when they go into Burger King, but the fact that Burger King has made positive changes for some of the animals killed for its restaurants will send a ripple effect through the fast food industry and show other companies that animal welfare cannot be ignored.”
Though the move is seen as a positive step towards the treatment of animals, one has to wonder what these new changes will mean to prices. Burger King has always been considered the runner up in the Fast Food race behind McDonald’s and recently began upping the size and price of their menu items in an effort to keep up with on the rise competitor Hardee’s. Now the question remains; Is American willing to pay more for the better quality animals or will they turn chicken?
