All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

Today while most of us got in our cars traveled to our 8-5’s and sat behind a computer screen pretending not to be playing on the internet all day, the state of California has decided to sue the Federal Government.  The suit was filled in an attempt to force to decide on whether or not states can impose a greenhouse emissions standard for cars/trucks.

With gas at an unheard of $5 a gallon in Cali and no sign of commuters making a massive switch to alternatives forms of transportation, Governor Schwarzenegger told reporters this morning “Our future depends on us taking action on global warming right now. There’s no legal basis for Washington to stand in our way." The debate has been going back and forth between the state and the feds for close to two years and involves a waiver request that would allow California to enact a 2002 law regulating greenhouse gases.

If the suit filed today against the Environmental Protection Agency is won by the state, over a dozen others across the country are expected to fall in line, thus sending shockwave’s through the auto industry. Statements from the California Attorney General’s office suggest that Arizona, Conneticut, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington will jump aboard the suit in weeks to come.

The law in questions sets out to drop greenhouse gas emissions by 25% over the next 12 years. As for the EPA they quickly shot off this response “The administrator has stated numerous times that he plans to make a decision by the end of the year. It’s unfortunate that California is more interested in getting a good headline than allowing us to make a decision."

Automakers such as Ford and GM both agree that if such standards were to be put into law, not only would your favorite sport utility vehicles skyrocket in price; some may disappear entirely.
