When I think PSA’s (public service announcement) I think about those old School House Rock shorts. You know the ones featuring “I’m Just A Bill” about the bill that’s trying to become a law. Then next on my list I’d have to say the classic “The More You Know” campaign from NBC still has a place in my memory banks. Who can forget what your brain looks like on drugs (apparently breakfast)? Then there are the ones that introduce you to a family and just when you begin to care about them, you find out they all died due to drunk driving. PSA’s are everywhere you look. They are apart of the American landscape and can be found on anything from billboards to cereal boxes. Recently California’s energy campaign “Flex Your Power” has started running some very touching and thought provoking spots. The program was created back in 2001 and is made up of the California utilities board, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and companies located throughout the state. The basic idea is to teach others about the importance of energy saving tactics and how to take matters in their own hands to help fight global warming. FYPOWER.org is filled with tips on how to get the most out of your energy bill for less, rebates and discounts directed towards businesses that are looking to go green, and the latest in energy news.
This is great and all, but what is really getting the program noticed are their heartwarming PSA’s. At 30 seconds apiece, each spot is an open letter to our children on the effects of drought, climate change, flooding, and keeping our environment clean. I was able to find all four online and after watching them below, I’m sure you will agree that these are some of the best PSA’s that have come out in a long while.
