All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

Life was good back in the 6th grade. My mom came in and woke me up for school every morning. I spent the day with my buddies in Mrs. Farmers class. Afterward it was home and a half-hour spent watching GI Joe on Nickelodean. Finish my homework just in time for dinner. Then to my room to watch Perfect Strangers .

What life in the 6th grade wasn’t was marketing reports, sales projections, environmental impact reports, and global warming concerns. As a matter of fact we didn’t even have Global Warming back when I was that age.

Thanks to the California Clean Tech Open, several elementary school students are getting some first-hand knowledge of what it takes to run a “Green” business of their own. The event which is held each year sets out to help individuals start and grow their own eco-centered company. Bao Tran was in the process of entering the contest on his own until his son (now the Chief Financial Officer) asked about the contest’s age limit….it turns out there wasn’t one. Thus with the help of some friends and his dad Calsunergy was formed.

The idea behind Calsunergy is that solar panels can be produced using high quality materials at low sale prices. With an 8th grader acting as the Chief Exectuve Officer, a 6th grader as Chief Tech Officer, and a 5th grader doing the jobs of Chief of Finance and V.P in charge of marketing, the kids are getting a crash course in business management.

The winner of the California Clean Tech Open receives $50,000 to start their business, free office space for a year, business help from a mentor, and professional legal/public relations aide.
