This is been the wettest, rainiest, stormiest spring in living memory, and with the moisture come the bugs.  Bugs love wet.  Bugs love humidity.Just mowing the grass, in the bright sunshine, the gnats, mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, and you-name-it come out in droves, sensing fresh blood.  You can spray your body with expensive chemicals and the bugs will just gnaw around it.However, there’s a way to spend some outdoor time without risking dangerous smelly chemicals.  It’s easy. For the past few summers, I’ve planted my tomatoes and peppers upside down and hung them from the deckposts.  I’m going to do it again this summer.

However, this summer, I’m not going to plant the tomatoes in those big bulky buckets.  Nor am I going to shell out the big bucks for one of those upside-down tomato kits.  I looked at one of those carefully in the store just today, and you know what it is?  It’s a big heavy plastic bag.

Well, I have a box of big heavy plastic bags, and mine are not only big and heavy; they’re 100% insect and animal-proof, completely biodegradable, and made of 100% natural ingredients as well!

I’m going to fill an Ecosmartplastics Repellem bag about half-full of potting soil in a month or so, and I’m going to tie it in a big knot.  I’m going to hang the dirt-filled bag over the plant hangar on the deckpost.  I’m going to make a little hole in the bottom of the bag and I’m going to plant a cherry tomato plant in the bag.  It will hang upside down on the deck, just outside the kitchen doors.  All summer long, whenever I need tomatoes for salad or just to snack on, all I have to do is open the kitchen door, take about three steps, and reach out my hand.  Not walk across the yard and bend down,  no no, just walk out the door a few steps and reach OUT.

I can eat my tomatoes right off the vine, without washing them, if I want to, and it will be safe because EcosmarPlastics and Repellem bags will keep the usual garden bugs, worms, and hungry animals away.  There will be no pesticides or poisons on my tomatoes.  Each little tomato will be perfect, because it will be untouched by insect or animal.  No turtles will take a bite.  No possums.  No raccoons.  No deer.

I can’t wait until it’s time!  I’m going to do this with all kinds of tomatoes and peppers, just like last summer, only I’m going to put ALL the plants in lovely red Ecosmartplastics Repellem bags.  My deck will look like Christmas and be like a fresh veggie buffet.

I showed you my pest-free tomato garden and upside-down-tomatoes last July. Well, this year I’ve done it again!

You read it right. I grow upside-down tomato plants on my deck. AND, like the tomato garden in my back yard, my upside-down deck tomatoes are also completely pest-free.

NOTHING bothers them. No insects. No animals. I’m not going to spray or dust any of my plants with anything, either; I’m going to depend on EcoSmart Repellem to take care of any and all mites, fungi, and living pestiferous things of every kind.  The cats won’t even nibble on the leaves, with Repellem near them.

Here’s a picture of one of the upside-down tomatoes. This is a really fun project; I wasn’t sure it would work, but I found the idea on Steve Spangler’s blog and it looked like it would be both fun AND easy, and so far? BOTH! If you look closely at this picture, you can see the big tomato garden in the distance – see the red EcoSmart Repellem strips tied around each tomato cage?

Here’s a close-up of the upside-down tomato. Here, you can plainly see the strip of red EcoSmart Repellem that I wrapped around the top of the bucket. Not only is that little strip of Repellem keeping all the bugs and animals away from the tomato; it’s also keep the mites and flies away from the petunias – even when there’s standing water around them!

Item: honeybees are not affected by EcoSmart Repellem products. The wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets are held at bay, but the honeybees don’t seem to mind Repellem at all. This is, of course, a GOOD thing! We WANT the honeybees!

I suggest that you all do to your gardens – big gardens and the little deck and porch pots – what I did to mine, which is: wrap strips of EcoSmart Repellem around them and watch your vegetables and flowers flourish!

If you look closely at the tomato garden, you will also see a “scarecrow” made of a broomstick with a big piece of Repellem tablecloth on it.  When the wind blows, it flaps like a flag and scares the deer away, and when the wind is still, the EcoSmart Repellem itself keeps the deer away.  Whenever I use any EcoSmart Repellem product, it’s always a win-win situation.

I also have little EcoSmart Repellem strips tied around the base of all my knockout rosebushes.  I won’t have to buy any rose “dust” this year, because NOTHING will bother my roses OR their leaves now.  It’s wonderful.

EcoSmart Repellem products are just simply wonderful.

P.S.  By the way?  With EcoSmart Repellem on your upside-down tomatoes, you can eat them right off the vine without washing them first!  And is there anything better than a fresh, picked-off-the-vine, sun-warmed cherry tomato in the summertime?

And why would I go to all the time and bother of winding strips of EcoSmart Repellem around each and every tomato cage in my little railroad flat garden? The answer to THAT question is easy: because it works.

Not only does it work, it works beautifully! Last year, my tomatoes were 100% untouched by insects OR animals! No gnats.  None of those huge scary-looking tomato worms.  The deer behaved as if they couldn’t even SEE all those big red delicious tomatoes hanging there.  Raccoons?  Nope.  Possums?  Zilch.  Even the turtles, which can be a genuine pest, stayed out of the garden.

You can even help yourself to a cherry tomato or raspberry and gobble it down, sun-warmed and fresher-then fresh, without a single worry about accidentally devouring an insect.  Your children can wander in the garden, as all children should, and you don’t have to worry about them touching dangerous powders or chemicals!  You can feed your family anything at all from your garden, without the slightest concern about chemicals!

I know I’ve posted about putting a Repellem bag under your Christmas tree skirt before, but as more and more of you are putting up your holiday decorations and trees now, the advice bears repeating.  I have indoor cats who can’t resist swinging, climbing, and batting at pretty much anything and everything, and yet, these lively jumping cats have left my Christmas tree completely alone.  It’s as if they can’t even see or smell it.

That’s because I put a Repellem trash bag under the tree skirt.

Repell-em really does live up to its name.  It doesn’t hurt or kill; it simply REPELS.  I feel safe in claiming that a Repellem product will repel anything the size of an average dog or smaller, all the way down to fleas and gnats.  I’m not ruling out Repellem working on larger animals, but I haven’t TRIED Repellem on polar bears or kangaroos yet.  I have, however, tried it on dogs the size of large collies, raccoons, possums, and cats of all sizes.  Oh, and DEER!  Repellem kept the deer out of my garden ALL SUMMER LONG!  Repellem worked on all of these animals, and let us sit out on our deck without having to swat mosquitoes, flies, or gnats all summer long, too.  Repellem also kept the wasps away, even when we had lemonade out there!

My mother has lined her fireplace mantle – well away from the flame or heat – with holiday-looking red Repellem tablecloths, folded, and her cats haven’t jumped up there to disturb or knock over her angel collection or little Christmas trains yet.  They won’t, either.

Animals can’t sense a Repellem product; therefore, anything you’re protecting with a Repellem product won’t be sensed, either.

Your pets will leave your holiday decorations alone if you just put some Repellem in there with them.

Come and look at my Christmas tree.  No cat could resist it.  And yet, with Repellem, they do!

How long does a Repell-em trash bag keep its potency?  Well, usually people don’t keep a filled trash bag around long enough to really tell, but this summer, I wrapped strips of Repell-em trash bag around my tomato cages.  That was pretty far back, more like late spring than summer.

Until last week, there was not a sign of an animal or insect in my garden.

Today, however, I did see some gnats out there.

So naturally, I put fresh Repell-em strips in my garden.  I figure, given the track record of the previous Repell-em strips, these new ones should last until after Thanksgiving.  Of course, the garden will be frozen by then, but you never know.  I can remember a few seasons when we still had tomatoes in the garden at Thanksgiving in Indiana, and this year, I’m ready for them.  No deer or insects will get my autumn garden, either!

I will admit that I was skeptical when I first heard about Repell-em products.  After all, I lived out in the country and the insects and animals were just something I had to live with, right?  You set your trash outside too early, the animals tear it apart.  You put some fruit in a bowl, and the gnats go nuts.

But I learned after just a few days that Repell-em products really did what they claimed they’d do.  Ever since I started to use them, I’ve not had to crawl around in my yard, picking up garbage that had been scattered by raccoons and possums, neighbor’s dogs and my own cats.  I haven’t had to use any kind of vegetable or flower spray or dust; a little strip of Repell-em kept all the bugs away from my garden and my roses.  When we eat out on the deck, we are not troubled by flies or bees or gnats, because the pretty red Repell-em tablecloth keeps away all the pests.

I can recommend Repell-em products to all of you because I tried them myself.  I now use them exclusively.

I planted ten new Breakout rosebushes in the front of my house this summer, and tied a little strip of Repell-em around the “trunk” of each one.  All ten of those rosebushes are covered with blooms, and not a single leaf on any of them has been molested by insects.  Ten pristine, perfect, blossom-covered rosebushes, and I give Repell-em the credit for that.

There is one rosebush behind my house, right by the deck.  I forgot to tie a piece of Repell-em around that one, and today I noticed that while it’s still alive, and has a few flowers on it, most of the leaves are lacy and eaten.  It’s quite a contrast with the roses in the front of the house.  I feel bad for forgetting to tie the Repell-em around this one, but I did it today, and I expect a full recovery soon.  I’ll keep you all posted.

The point here is that Repell-em really does keep your expensive plants alive.  Flowers, trees, vegetables. . . you name it, Repell-em protects it.

Our tomatoes in the back garden are doing extremely well, and have not once been bothered by insects or animals.  We have never sprayed or dusted them with anything; the little strip of Repell-em around the stalk of each, and around the tomato cages, have done the trick.

It was such a simple, easy little thing to do, and it’s kept my plants healthy all summer.

I’ve had guests these past few days and we have been able to sit outside in absolute comfort.  We were not annoyed by pesky flies, or stinging mosquitoes, or chiggers.  We came inside not because we were driven by hordes of bugs, but because we wanted to.

Thanks to Repell-em, it’s comfortable in our yard now.  And back in the garden, all the vegetables are healthy

I can’t begin to tell you how wonderful it is to be able to enjoy the outdoors like we are this summer.    With Repell-em, the outdoors is almost as safe as the indoors!  No bugs and no animals to bother you,  and nothing but a breeze, some sunshine, a lawn chair, and some lemonade.
