My wife and I have been using a line of products over the past few years called Burts Bee’s. The company which is hugely popular here in the south, began out of Maine back in 1984 by selling beeswax candles. Over the years their list of honey based products has turned into a $250 million dollar a year selling monster making them the number one leading manufacturer of Earth-friendly natural personal care products on the market. Since those first candles were sold some 23 years ago, the company has added 150 products to their line. Personally though we mostly stick to the soap and hair care products, what we love most is their commitment to the planet.
As stated on their website “We remain committed to the environment with recycled and recyclable packaging and nature-safe manufacturing processes, and we’re continuing the land preservation efforts we started in Maine. We’re also helping out our fellow humans, too, with initiatives to provide sustainable housing for the less fortunate. It’s all part of our dedication to The Greater Good, a set of standards for the products we make and the way we live.”
All of this is great and good, but news form the corporate world has me a little stumped this week. According to the NY Times, the company has just been purchased by Clorox….as in Clorox Bleach!! I understand the need to for a company to diversify and spread out into other areas of the market. If Toy’s R Us wants to purchase a gadget company of some sort. Than great. Toys for the adults. I get it. Let’s say Nike decides it needs to grow a bit and picks up a sock company or two. Fine socks go into shoes.
What I don’t understand is why Clorox is getting into the honey business? Furthermore will the Burts Bee’s commitment to the environment remain as strong, even though they will soon be owned the makers of such a toxic product? I mean how do disinfectant wipes and lip balm fit side by side in the company mission statement? Do I really want to think bleach when I see the display for an all natural honey based shampoo?
