In case you forgot or live in Arizona and are smart enough not to care, Daylight savings time took place this weekend. The bi-annual process revolves around the idea that in order to save energy the clocks must be moved forward/backward an hour twice a year. The idea was first brought to everyone’s attention way back in 1907 by William Willett in an attempt to find away to cut energy costs by allowing for more daylight.
Benjamin Franklin was a major proponent of DST and even suggested that in order to force people to get up earlier/go to bed earlier that the government should pay people to ring bells in the street, tax window blinds, control the sell of candles, and even fire the occasional cannon at sunrise every morning till people got the message.
DST is supposed to benefit those people/companies that must have sunlight to conduct their day-to-day activities. I’m here today to say that this is all a bunch of garbage. Back in 1907 when the world woke up at sunrise to slop the hogs or bringing in the corn, this may have been a great idea. In 2007 messing with the laws of time often results in what can only be assumed to be billions in lost dollars due to half the country being late combined with all the energy lost trying to convince a ten year old VCR that we lost an hour.
Think of all the electronic devises you come into contact with during the course of your normal day. The alarm, the coffee pot, the microwave, every room in your house has a clock, both cars have clocks included in their radio displays, every TV, VCR, DVD, TIVO, computer, wristwatch, and bank sign has to be adjusted. Don’t even get me started about how hard it is convincing a 4 year-old that it’s time to go to bed even though it’s still daylight outside.
I say the time it takes to take the time to change the time takes too much time away from all the time I could be spending enjoying my time
