All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

Remember as a child how your parents would tuck you in at night, making sure you were safe and warm under the covers? Your mom would kiss you on the forehead, cut the light out, and just before she closed the door she would say “Good Night. Don’t let the bed bugs bite.” Leaving you in the dark with the fear that the slightest itch or tickle was a bug crawling up your leg. Well your mom may have not realized it at the time, but bed bugs are more than just urban legend. In fact they such a major issue, that local governments in all 50 states are working on efforts to control what some are calling a plague.

What exactly are bed bugs? The most common are tiny tick shaped insects that can hide anywhere in your house. At night they attach themselves to you, drink your blood, and leave itchy bumps all over you body. Typically beg bugs are not known to carry disease, but they are almost impossible to kill. One study of pest control reports indicates calls for help in exterminating bed bugs rose 71% between 2002 and 2005. To clean an average home that is infested with bed bugs costs an estimated $5000 and requires 8-10 visits before they are completely removed.

Don’t think moving is a way to rid yourself of the little bloodsuckers. Often the bugs are hidden in your clothes, mattress, luggage, and even can be found in your car. So why the recent explosion in the bed bug population? Many believe it is due to gravitation by consumers toward chemical free repellents and away from indoor spraying. Laura Krueger of the California Department of Health Services says, “We don’t use as harsh chemicals as we used to, we don’t spray mattresses with insecticide before selling them anymore, and the bugs are getting increasingly resistant to the few chemicals we have left”

Don’t become a slave to bed bugs. Here is a list of Does and Don’ts from Bedbugger.com:

  • Don’t change beds, they will follow
  • Do save the bugs you find to show to the pest control guy
  • Do make sure you don’t have other medical conditions before you call the pest control company
  • Don’t throw your furniture out
  • Don’t try to fix the problem yourself. Leave the treating to the professionals. No Foggers!!!
  • Do Wash all your of your clothes and fabrics in hot water
  • Don’t think they are just in your bed
  • Don’t believe they only bite at night

Are you one of those people that must see before they believe? Well I hope your not reading this before bed time because this next video gave me nightmares:

Have you ever tried diatomaceous earth and it’s inorganic. It’s a very fine dust and when the insects go though it they wear holes it the exoskeleton and the insect dies if dehydration. You have to be careful that you don’t breath any but because it’s inorganic you won’t die.

Try it; it works on ants, roaches and dozens of insects.

Here’s some more info on DE: Fresh water kind is saf(er) and don’t ever use the pool grade type to treat for bugs. (That’s why it’s called pool grade).
Many on-line pest control sites sell it: it works but it needs to be used with Pest control operator’s knowledge and consent. (It might mess up the poisons they lay down. Some won’t treat you if you use DE. Goggles and a dust mask are musts when applying it and it is best to put into corners: Don’t inhale the freshwater kind, even though it is not what you’d call deadly … it can, over time if inhaled too much cause “dusty lung syndrome” The Pool grade type–that is quite possible carcinogenic or as bad to inhale even some. Definitely check out all Google sites where you find it BEFORE you buy it.
Having kids and pets that may come into contact is some cause for concern inhalation wise and body contact wise—as are adults—but perhaps moreso.
