All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

We’ve all heard it before “Wal-Mart is an evil entity bent on bringing down small business and fair competition.” Countless stories are aired each year by local television stations on how (insert small town of your choice here)

is attempting to halt the corporate juggernaut from invading it’s streets. Thousands of “Old Man Johnsons” are shown raising a shaky fist into the air declaring their unending  devotion to their local hardware store and it’s 50 years of providing great service. In the corporate world the first thing you learn if you want to do business with the retail giant is that you do it their way or you risk having over half your target demographic having zero knowledge of the amazing products you carry.

But just how bad is Wal-Mart? In the case of the Thai shrimp farmers, maybe not so bad. The Global Aquaculture Alliance (which is backed Wal-Mart) has set forth new standards which if followed will have a huge impact on the planet. You see shrimp and other aquaculture farmers cut down a huge number of mango trees each year in order to make room for their farms. The new standards set forth require farmers to plant an amazing three times as many trees they cut down…..or else? Or else Wal-Mart and other U.S companies in the alliance will refuse to purchase their product. If this doesn’t sound like a major threat think about this: Not only does Thailand send $1.28 billion dollars of shrimp to the U.S each year, but the major buyer is of course Wal-Mart. How’s that for throwing your weight around?
