The formula is easy: Take a family that has been the victim of some horrible disaster (whether it be illness, natural disaster, or other life changing circumstances). Add a television network dying for ratings and looking for something life changing to fill the gap. Mix in a gazillion corporate sponsors looking for some good P.R. and free advertising. Get yourself a host every woman wants and you’ve got the makings of a ratings smash. Extreme Makeover Home Edition has been making families all across the country cry like babies for several years now and this year they are taking the life changing "7 days to a new home" theme to the next level. This season the show is going green.
By installing green appliances along with low energy bulbs and using recycled products whenever possible, the show just may be the greenest thing on T.V. since Kermit The Frog. The whole thing was kicked off the by the introduction to the Yazzie family. From a Navajo reservation in Pinon, Arizona, the family has spent the last five years with nothing in the way of heat, running water, or the everyday amenities that we take for granted (a microwave, air conditioning, television). Son Garrett (age 13) was the one responsible for catching the shows attention and helping to provide his family the home they deserve. Garrett himself is the inventor of a heating system that utilizes a 60+ aluminum cans and a car transmission.
The team at Extreme Makeover built the Yanzie family a home that featured: recycled materials from a nearby landfill, a greenhouse for collecting rainwater to help irrigate plants, solar panels for heating, and the use of grape vines to provide shade around the house.
