A lot has been made lately about the large number of companies shifting their focus to that of a greener way of life. All across the world big business is scrambling to finance the latest eco-trend in hopes of “saving the world” Carbon offsets are the new stocks and bonds of the corporate world and it seems “global warming” has become the face of a thousand evils. One great new example of this is the recent announcement that mega retailer Wal-mart is donating over $1.5 million to the University of Arkansas in an effort to find ways retailers can cut back on their impact on the environment. General Electric is another company that is leading the pack when it comes to investing in the saving of the planet. According to a report posted on CNN this past week companies in the U.S are investing over $4 billion each year in their fight against the woes of Global Warming.
So here’s my question….Is this a sincere attempt by Big Business to do their part in saving the environment or like most things is this just another marketing attempt aimed at the growing number of people seeking to reverse 100 years of damaged caused by man? I for one will fully admit to looking more dollar friendly at products that claim to be good for the environment. I’ve purchased numerous products simply based on the fact that they are eco-friendly. Unfortunately there’s not much we as consumers can do when it comes to looking for green products other than being educated on what truly makes a product good for the environment. Is it made from recycled products? Can it be recycled? Does it create certain types of pollution? In a world where money is everything going green may just be the quickest route to collecting the green.
