In case you haven’t heard or walked outside, the South/Midwest is experiencing a heat wave of record proportions. In total over 50 people have died from the dramatic temps and it looks as though things will be getting much worse before they get any better. How hot is it? Try “Shutting Down A Nuclear Plant” hot. Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant located in northern Alabama uses water from the Tennessee River to cool it’s reactors. But what happens when the water you are using to cool the reactors with becomes too hot to do any good? You start shutting down and cutting back your operations.
Speaking from the stand point of somebody who has lived in North Alabama his entire live, it’s hot!! After 12 straight days of 100+ heat, life begins to change in a few ways:
- You stop cutting the grass and fork over the $40 bucks to the kid next door.
- That beautiful yard you just spent every weekend toiling away in since February is abandoned.
- Forget grilling, swimming, basketball, golf, picnics, hiking, and nights spent relaxing on the back porch. Summer time officially ends at 102 degrees and hibernation is strongly encouraged
- Your hands are constantly being tortured each time you climb into the car and grab the 250 degree steering wheel. Pretty soon you learn to drive with your knee, which also allows more time to eat ice cream while you drive.
- Everyone and I mean EVERYONE becomes irritable. It’s as if the heat has literally melted through all positive thought until all that is left are varying degrees of grouchiness.
- Children forget about the joys that lay beyond the four walls constantly surrounding them and playgrounds begin to resemble relics from an ancient civilization long ago forgotten
With no end in sight (unless of course you are along the Gulf Of Mexico and then you’re watching out for Hurricane Dean) authorities are asking residents to drink plenty of fluids and avoid going outside whenever possible.
