All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

As I was tripping across the morning headlines I came across this rather odd report straight out of Australia. The story states that noted Australian Associate Professor Barry Walters is proposing a tax on the number of children you have. Walters says that due to over crowding and the subsequent increase in greenhouse gas emissions, parents should pay upwards of $1300 a year in order to help replenish the resources they are destroying.

In a recent article published in the Medical Journal Of Australia, Waters says “Every newborn baby in Australia represents a potent source of greenhouse gas emissions for an average of 80 years, not simply by breathing but by the profligate consumption of resources typical of our society. Far from showering financial booty on new mothers and rewarding greenhouse-unfriendly behavior, a ‘baby levy’ in the form of a carbon tax should apply, in line with the ‘polluter pays’ principle."

To be fair as a parent of a two year-old I do wonder how the 10 diapers, 20 wipes, 4 trips to town, and other un-friendly planet practices that rule our lives and shall continue to do so for years to come will effect the environment. That’s why we recycle when we can and watch just how much we are wasting. Though some say the idea of a baby tax is completely ridiculous a spokeswoman from the Australian Family Association responded to the Waters and his supporters with  “I think self-important professors with silly ideas should have to pay carbon tax for all the hot air they create. There’s masses of evidence to say that child-rich families have much lower resource consumption per head than other styles of households”
