On the list of most annoying things in life, Bees and Cell Phones have got to be in the top 25. Though cell phones are a necessity in today’s hectic world and I myself never leave home with out mine, they are a constant source of aggravation. Whether your trying to get to work and find yourself behind somebody yapping on their phone while driving 35mph so they don’t cause a wreck (which causes a wreck because everyone starts riding the bumper in the car in front of them) or trying to watch the movie you just spent $50 bucks to see without choking the guy behind you who refuses to switch to vibrate. Don’t get me started on headsets. Now a days you never know if the guy coming towards you is talking to himself cause he’s crazy or if there’s a wireless in his ear.
Bees are just as bad. Nothing ruins a beautiful day like a bee sting. One minute you’re walking through your yard, playing with the kids, the smell of meat cooking on the grill… the next thing you know Jr. has stepped on a bee and his foot is swelling to twice it’s size. Plus they insist on building their hives where you least expect them. I opened the shed door last week and a dozen swarmed out after me. Apparently they had snuck in and set up camp the last time I cut grass.
Now scientists all over the world are saying that the radiation put off by the cell phones may be responsible for a major decline in the bee population. A new theory circulating the scientific community is that cell phone signals are throwing off the navigation systems of worker bees and thus causing the hives to be abandoned with only a queen remaining. It is assumed that once lost the worker bees simply die trying to find their way back.
CCD or Colony Collapse Disorder has been reported in the U.S., Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, and most of Europe. According to this article the western coastline of The United States has seen a decline of over 70% while the east coast has dropped by 60%.
While the theory is still being debated, it has been proven that bees are often thrown off by power lines. Further more the increasing rate of cell phone usage has been linked to cancer, low sperm counts, and brain tumors. Though an official reason for the decline in the bee population has not been found, many are of the belief that not only are cell phones killing the bees, but if something is not done to reverse the process soon a domino effect may occur that would endanger all life on Earth.
