Last week I brought you the news that the Discovery Channel will be launching the first channel completely devoted entirely to green issues. Planet Green is scheduled to start airing sometime next year and among the original programs on the channel one will be completely devoted to the rebuilding of Greensburg Kansas. Greensburg was completely destroyed and 10 people were killed by an F5 tornado on May 4 of this year. With over 90% of the town torn apart, it’s 1400 residents are just now seeing life begin to return back to normal…with one major exception Greensburg is transforming itself into a “green town” and the entire thing will be capture for the series “Eco-Town”. The 13 part series will be made by The Discovery Channel in conjunction with Leonardo DiCaprio with the intent of turning Greensburg into a “sustainable model of eco-living and one that will save it from future environmental catastrophe.”
DiCaprio will also serve as an executive producer for the show and also serve on the board of adviser for Planet Green. As for the series CEO David Zaslav told reporters “The centerpiece of the launch of Planet Green is going to be our effort to help the governor of Kansas and the town of Greensburg, Kan., to rebuild that town green. It’s not just about entertainment; we’re going to put our resources into Greensburg and Planet Green and try to make a difference”
As to what exactly a “green town” will look like one can say it will all depend on the commitment of it’s leaders and of course how much money will be available. That’s where DiCaprio comes in according to Eileen Oneil President of Planet Green “We hope it brings a visibility that gets some of the resources that the town really does need and Leo as an avid environmentalist is committed to this project and it is really important to him”
Here is a video of just some of the damaged caused by the F5 on May 4th:
