One thing I love about writing this environmental site for Repellem products is discussing the grass roots efforts being made by people all across the country who simply have a desire to make the world a better place. Everyday I hear about new and fascinating ways ordinary people are stepping up to either invent some new environmentally friendly product (like Repellem) or to create a new event in hopes of educating and rallying the public. Recently I brought the story about National Park(ing) day in which cities all across the country were turning parking places into public parks complete with swing sets, benches, and live music. It was a huge success and now I’ve got something new for those interested…Lights Out San Francisco
Now don’t let the title fool you cause though I’m way over on the other side of the country I fully intend to participate. The idea behind this event is get everyone to cut off all power between the hours of 8-9 P.M. on Saturday October 20. If sitting in the dark isn’t quite your idea of a good time, the program is allowing those that need to see the ability to install one compact fluorescent bulb to run during this time. The event’s home-page lightsoutsf.org is estimating that just this one-hour of darkness could save over 15 % of the energy that would normally be used on an average Saturday night. Now the folks behind the program are busy getting local companies to follow their lead and have even managed to get The Bay Bridge and TransAmerica Buildings to participate. My question is “Why stop with San Francisco?” I say let’s all get behind this great idea and do some good.
What should you do during the dark hour? How about these cool ideas:
HALLOWEEN is just a few weeks away, why not gather your family together and tell ghost stories.
GO CAMPING and cut power to you home for the entire night
USE CANDLES preferably those that are environmentally friendly
GET OUT THE TELESCOPE and see what you can see up above
TEACH THE KIDS the joy of catching fireflies. In the south this time of year they are everywhere.
INVITE OVER FRIENDS for a cookout. You don’t need electricity to have a good time. Fire up the grill, invite that buddy who’s good with the guitar over, and chill out for awhile.
Regardless of what you do that night, make plans to do it without using electricity. You just might be doing more that saving power; you might be saving the planet.
Buy Repell-em Garbage Bags and keep the animals away!
