Friday marked an historic date for the state of New Jersey. It was on that day that Governor Jon Corizine signed into existence one of the toughest greenhouse gas reduction laws in the country. It was at Giants Stadium home of the Live Earth concerts that the governor told reporters “We want to send a message to Washington. Wake up, get with the program and start doing something about greenhouse gases“. Entitled “The Global Warming Response Act” lays out a plan to cut the states gas emissions from 18% in 2020 to 80% by 2050!!
With the current environmental bill stalling in congress until possibly after 2009 when George Bush leaves office, states all around the country are coming to the conclusion that if they want effective environmental changes to take place, they must start on a local/state level. California also enacted a similar law.
While the recent act is a great start, it may take years of hard work, determination, and commitment to the act in order to make sure it does what it promises. One the major concerns by opponents of the act say that thought the end result is ideal, the fact remains that in order to cut back the damaging greenhouse gas emissions costs of utilities would rise.
This latest move by New Jersey is just one of many added to a list of such projects such as promoting reusable energy sources such at wind and solar power, educating the public on how they can conserve power, and using trains instead of trucking companies to move product within the state.
