All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg took a major step in helping to clean the city of its pollution problem by announcing that by 2012 all city cabs will be gas-electric hybrids.

This sounds great, but are the new gas-hybrids really all they are cracked up to be? According to the folks over at howstuffworks they are more jus a passing fad. The 2007 Hybrids contain smaller engines that require less gas to accelerate, use less energy to power the car’s cylinders, have fewer cylinders to operate. Plus Hybrids have the ability to capture energy and store it in a battery for later use (normally a non-hybrid loses energy once the breaks are pushed down). The gas source to a hybrid can easily be shut off and switched back on if the driver feels he will be waiting in line or a light from a long period of time. This will not shut the car off, but merely switch the controls to electric power and thus save fuel. Hybrid cars also take advantage of the latest aerodynamics in order to reduce wind drag and increase fuel efficiency.

At the moment there are several hybrid sedans New York City officials are considering to replace the current taxi models including the Toyota Prius, Honda Accord, and Honda Civic. With over 13000 taxis in circulation the city reports are that they will replace at a rate of 20% per year.
