My son loves corn. Eats it by the handfuls. We were out with some friends the other night and they happened to mention that we should start stocking up on it while it was still cheap. We were in a large group so I never got the reason why, but now thanks to the Climateer it all just fell into place. It seems that Iowa is about to be bursting with the second largest corn crop on record and all the farmers’ need are rain…which is something they may not get in time.
The state is in a rare position of recovering from a flood in one section, while going through a drought in others. With an estimated 13.95 million acres of corn at risk, if the rain doesn’t come fast prices on all things corn/ethanol will be at a major risk. As one farmer puts it “We don’t need another week without rain. The corn, especially on lighter ground, will start rolling soon to protect itself. We’re not overly blessed (with moisture).” Rolling back is the process by which the corn plant begins to curl its leaves in an attempt to contain water and protect itself. The more the leaves roll back the more area exposed to the sun and the less corn produced.
As of last week the crop came in at 1% very poor, 4% poor, 19% percent fair, 54% good, and 22% excellent. With no rain in the forecast for the next few days, many feel it’s just a matter of time before prices skyrocket as the year’s harvest reaches a disastrous conclusion.
