All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

Oil spills happen. It’s an unfortunate part of life and just another consequence of relying so heavily on the resource to power the planet. Obviously the more oil we need the more we have to transport it the more accidents there will be. However of all places for an oil spill to occur if you’re Big Oil, you never want to hear about one happening in the San Francisco Bay. Let me rephrase that. You never want to hear about oil spills at all, however there’s something about hearing the news that a tanker the size of the Titanic rammed into the Bay Bridge thus sending an estimated 58,000 gallons of oil into the water, that makes you cringe. Cringe due to the humongous effect all that oil will have on the environment. Cringe from the images of birds and fish drowning in oil. Cringe because you just know that the city of San Francisco is about to tear into somebody in a major way.

We are talking about the same city that banned plastic bags at the grocery. Banned the sale of bottled water on city owned property. The same city belonging to the same state that just yesterday filed a suit against the federal government so they could enact greater restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions. Of all the places to experience an oil spill, San Fran is the one place where you know they are going to come at you immediately with the equivalent of a nuclear sized lawsuit. And that’s exactly what they did less than 48 hours after the accident occurred.

In a statement released just this morning from Mayor Gavin Newsom “We’ll be doing everything to make sure that those who are responsible are held accountable and that the costs borne by this will be borne by the appropriate agency or agencies… or individuals or companies that are responsible”

Meaning “We are going after anyone and everyone that ever let a drop of oil fall into the bay. Forget payback we want unprecedented compensation. We want ownership of the owners of the tanker that hit the bridge. We want our coastlines spick and span. By the time we are through we want to own the company that put the oil in the boat that ran into our bridge!!”

To make matters worse the initial estimate by the Coast Guard came in at around 140 gallons causing a response from the appropriate agencies appropriate for a 140-gallon oil spill. Then hours later after the clean up had already began the Coast Guard changed that number to 58,000.  I’m wouldn’t be surprised at all to see the next bit of news coming out to be along the lines of “San Francisco Sues The Coast Guard”.
