I just bought a Ford Edge. It had the room I needed, a nice design, and the only real drawback was the gas tank was a little bigger than what I was previously used too. So I’m putting a little more in the tank and not getting the gas mileage I was with the Honda Civic I traded in. Now I can’t help but wonder if I made the right choice after seeing this today in The Independent.
Contrary to BP’s Statistical Review Of World Energy which said reserves will last another 40 years (as long as usage remains the same which it won’t considering we use more now than ever before), comes a report from the Oil Depletion Analysis Centre stating that 4 years from now the amount of oil available will peak and afterward it’s all down hill from there.
Before you freak and start trying to figure out how long it will take you to ride your kids bicycle to work everyday, I think it’s imperative we pay attention to who is putting out these opposing studies. To say that BP is airing on the conservative side would be like saying Al Gore has a passing interest in Global Warming. Of course the suits at BP are going to release a study over inflating the worlds oil supply!!! With profits setting records every quarter, who has the most to lose from alternate fuel than oil companies? They don’t want you to buy a hybrid. They spend millions everyday whispering in your ear to get that Excursion you’ve always wanted.
The opposite is true with the information from the Oil Depletion Centre. From the name alone you automatically know that they study the rate of the world’s oil depletion. They aren’t going to come out and say “We apologize but the very existence of this agency is a complete waste of time since it appears oil will never run out.” Just like BP they are most likely taking the truth and stretching it to fit their cause.
Is there an end to the world’s oil reserve? Definitely. Will it be in 4 years? Doubtful. Does this mean we shouldn’t focus on alternate fuel? Of course not. Everything on this planet has an invisible egg timer attached to it. The moment we were created the clock was set and someday the buzzer is going to sound signaling our time is up. The dinosaurs, cavemen, extinct animals, diseases, nothing was meant to last forever and oil will someday be as rare as the T-Rex.
