All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

I meant to help spread the word last week about Nickelodeon’s “Let’s Just Play Challenge” this past Saturday. Believe it or not the network made sure that faithful viewers wouldn’t be tempted by the likes of Sponge Bob Squarepants, Jimmy Neutron, and The Wonder Pets and thus be forced to find something else to do preferably outside. How did they manage to pull this off? By cutting all program from the hours of 3-6. Tikes that tuned in or parents begging for some babysitting help from The Fairly Odd Parents were shocked to find nothing more than a blank screen awaiting them.

While the geniuses behind the program knew full well they couldn’t compete with other outdoor detractors such as video games, the Internet, and movies the hope was that parents would come through and seize the moment to take their kids out.

After the three-hour break kids were asked to tune in to find out what others had been doing outside over the past several months. One 13 year-old in particular called only by the name of Kendrick was featured talking about his problem of childhood obesity. Kendrick told viewers before he was just a “couch potato who played video games and didn’t go outside much” Since the he took on the great outdoors, Kendrick has learned to swim, dropped 40 pounds, and recently entered a triathlon. After Kendrick piece aired on the show, Nickelodeon reported that some 750,000 kids logged on to the web and pledged to start their own fight against obesity.
