It’s an interesting question “Should Americans Be Forced To Recycle?” Ok so maybe in the land of the free and the home of the brave “Forced” is too strong a word. Let me rephrase “Should Americans Pay A Fine For Not Recycling?” Believe it or not a story posted today on Unplugged Living says that such a thing just may happen in the United Kingdom. The author writes “A news report from The Sun revealed that households would have to pay an additional £100 for their council taxes if they do not recycle. If they do, then they are free from such a fine.”
First of all I know that things are different overseas, but please don’t act like our elected government officials couldn’t get away with making this a law without it being voted on. Every year amendments that have just as much impact our our daily lives are attached to bills and voted into being without anyone asking the public for majority approval. Let’s chat this up though. In this country it’s obvious that we over indulge. We eat too much, spend too much, drive the biggest cars, jet around in our airplanes back and forth to cities that are less than 50 miles apart. The largest portion of this country could care less about recycling, conserving, or cleaning up the environment. So should we make them?
Second, before you start screaming at the top of your lungs that I’m insane think about how much a city spends each year in order to clean up our messes. Garbage men, garbage trucks, landfills, people to pick up trash on the sides of the road, buildings being washed due to air polution collecting and turning their outsides brown….some cities transport their trash to other states. What if Americans were given a choice: You can either recycle and help preserve this beautiful country you live in or for $100 a month you can pay us to clean up after you. What about taxes? I know we pay taxes on everything from the air we breath to homerun balls that haven’t even been sold yet, but this would be in addition to those taxes. A “Clean Up America” bill due on the 30th of every month….like I said it’s just an idea, but one you may be hearing more about in the coming months.

Americans should be forced to recycle. I think it is rediculous to reward people for doing what they should have been doing in the first place. Like a child that will only do schoolwork if they get paid. In the end, it helps no one. If taxing the public is what it takes to get the lazy public up from their electronically heated chairs, then it should be done. Americans need to open their eyes to what they throw away.
