It’s the middle of summer. Temps are climbing into the upper 90’s/low 100’s every blistering day. Your running the AC on overdrive and it’s still barely able to cool you off. It hasn’t rained in weeks…feels like months. You just spent the night stuck to the bed sheets praying for some type of relief in the form of rain and dreaming of snow in July. After a quick jump in the shower you trudge over to the closet and stare eye to eye with the beast that consumes you 10 hours a day…the business suit. Buttoned up shirt, power tie, suit jacket, and perfectly ironed matching pants. You can feel them already beginning to suck the life out of you as they hang there. Some daydream about beautiful women and wild adventures, you fantasize about khakis and polo shirts. If only there was some way to convince the boss to let the office go business casual. Surely there’s some type of savings associated with letting employees dress down?
As a matter of fact there is. Not only that but that Italy is practically begging it’s business owners to allow employees to toss their ties. In a story featured on Yahoo News last week, the Italian government is sending out the message that a casual work environment will not only cut back on energy costs but would also scale back greenhouse gas emissions. One official was quoted as saying:
“Taking your tie off immediately lowers the body temperature by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. Allowing a more sensible use of air conditioning that yields electricity savings and protects the environment.”
Now if only we could get this idea into the minds of CEO’s in the U.S. Imagine the savings this could bring to big business. By simply saying goodbye to the necktie and hello to the polo, companies could get more room in their budgets, help office morale, and do their part to help the environment. So before you get ready to put that noose around your neck tomorrow, check with the boss and explain to him how much you want to help the company save some cash.
