All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

My mother belongs to a missionary society, and these ladies regularly pack boxes full of necessities and maybe a few luxuries to mail to the members of their church who are currently living overseas, most of them in very hot countries and with very few amenities to make things pleasant.

Mom was telling me about a letter they’d received from one of their missionaries, and in this letter, a lady was describing their never-ending battle with scavenging animals and insects. She told the church ladies that she and her family were always covered with bug bites, always itching, always shaking the sheets to be rid of the spiders and heaven-knows-what else. There is always a bug in everybody’s shoe, always an animal sniffing around the trash, and it was to the point that it was dangerous to let the children play outside. She described the stray dogs and coyotes, the raccoons and other wild and semi-wild and even fairly tame animals who made hash and hay of any trash or garbage. This lady lamented that even though churches sent really nice, expensive trash bags all the time, none of them could stand up to the insects and hungry animals of this area of the planet.

So, I gave Mom one of my boxes of Repell-em trash bags to pack in the missionary box, and I asked the church ladies to ask the missionaries if they would mind reporting back to me on whether or not the Repell-em product did the trick and kept the bugs and stray animals away from the bagged garbage.

When I hear, I’ll let you all know!

One more thank-you to everyone who entered the Repell-em contest; those of you who responded in time with your mailing information should be getting your sample very soon.

There will be another Repell-em contest in the spring, so keep watching this blog for details!

And hey, if you plan on sending a box of whatever to missionaries, friends, etc. who are living in a hot, insect-y country, you might consider putting some Repell-em products in there. I’m betting that Repell-em magic will make a world of difference to someone who is living a world away, trying to make the world a better place.

  • camperFrom reader/commenter Ellen comes these fantastic hints for using your Repell-em bags:

Ellen tell us that a fellow camper gave them some Repell-em bags (she calls them “magnificent garbage bags!”) and she put one in their campsite’s outside area, and the other she opened up and put under the non-skid mat outside the door, down the three steps and onto the ground. Ellen reminded us that having that mat on the ground is often just asking for trouble, but she got tired of sweeping and mopping up the linoleum in her new travel trailer.

According to Ellen, she had tried every anti-insect remedy known to mankind, but nothing worked until she tried the Repell-em bags.

She informed us that the ants and “other creepy-crawlies” would not cross the Repell-em line, and the inside of her new camper was bug-free.

Ellen went on to suggest that a piece of Repell-em bag tucked into a pocket or tucked into shoelaces might make evening walks more comfortable and could be reused as ties around the water and sewage hoses as a little extra “security.”

We here at Repell-em Products thank you, Ellen, for entering our contest and for giving us examples of how you use our product. You’ll be getting a sample in the mail, and perhaps you’ll even WIN!

Speaking of the Repell-em Contest, today is the last day to enter. At midnight tonight, the ballot box will be closed, and within the next few days, all entrants should expect to get an email from Jane at One by One Media (that’s me!) asking for a mailing address for your freebies.

On Wednesday of next week, we will email the winners and post their names and prizes right here on this blog.

    Stay tuned!

And Ellen, thank you again. You’re awesome.

  • possumintrashIf you live in southern Indiana, you’ve seen this sight before.

Possums are the only North American marsupial, and they grow to be pretty darn big and extremely strong. A full-grown possum can tear a trash bag to ribbons and scatter its contents over a acre or more in a matter of minutes. Few garbage cans, even with lids that seal tightly, are capable of keeping a determined possum out. Their sense of smell is STRONG, and their sense of entitlement - to your garbage - is stronger.

However, a full-grown possum is no match for a Repell-em trash bag. Most animals can’t see Repell-em bags very well, for starters, because of their color, and most animals won’t come NEAR a Repell-em bag because they are repelled by the smell.

By the way, Repell-em bags smell really good to humans. The all-natural ingredients, completely harmless to people, combine to make a product that doesn’t just smell okay, as in “not stinky;” Repell-em bags smell GOOD. Like a nice candle you’d buy.

Put your garbage out on the deck or out by the street the night before it’s due to be picked up, and chances are that dogs, raccoons, and possums will tear it to pieces within the hour - IF it’s in ordinary trash bags. Put your garbage out on the deck or out by the street the night before it’s due to be picked up, and chances are that dogs, raccoons, and possums won’t even know it’s there - IF it’s in Repell-em trash bags.

Out in the country, we have terrible possum problems. They’re bold, and big, and sometimes they snarl and bite if they’ve honed in on your garbage and intend to have it. Possums carry rabies, too. They’re nocturnal, so if you see one during the day, RUN.

Of course, if you use Repell-em bags, you won’t have that problem at all. The possums will all be at your neighbor’s house, tearing up the turf. YOUR garbage -even the fish heads and leftover sauerkraut and kielbasa - will be safe and unmolested inside your Repell-em trash bags.

  • racoonsRaccoons are searching for your garbage. They can smell it from across the miles, and they’ll find it and they’ll scatter it.

They might be adorably cute, but the truth is, raccoons are the #1 carriers of rabies, and even if they don’t bite YOU, they could easily infect your dog or cat.

Remember, too, that raccoons are nocturnal animals; if ever you see a raccoon in the daytime, DON’T GO NEAR IT.

My point right here, however, is that raccoons love to mess with your garbage. The sight of a big white trash bag is like a dinner invitation to a raccoon. The aroma of your festering garbage is like the sweet perfume of a pizza parlor to a raccoon.

Of course, if you use Repell-em trash bags, no raccoon, dog, cat, squirrel, insect, or spider monkey* will come NEAR your trash. The red coloring is outside their field of vision; they can’t smell the contents, and if they come near for any reason, the ingredients in Repell-em bags will live up to their name: the animals will be REPELLED.

Remember, too, that those same ingredients that are so repulsive to animals and insects are pleasant and harmless to humans.

*To be perfectly honest, we haven’t tested the product on spider monkeys yet, but it’s my guess that spider monkeys would be repelled, too.

I have three cats that live inside the house most of the time. They don’t know they’re cats; they think they’re people. Once in a while, a mouse will run across the carpet, but the cats just think someone came over to play with them. Sigh.

That’s why we started putting pieces of Repell-em trash bags here and there under the furniture, in a drawer, under the silverware tray, and in the pantry where I keep our food. A folded Repell-em bag keeps the cats off the sofas and chairs, too. Fantastic!

By the way, if you put pieces of Repell-em bags in YOUR pantry, you won’t ever get weevils again! It really works!

Back to the cats. I can’t put out any kind of poison for mice, because my cats would eat it, too. I needed something that repelled the cats from the furniture, pantry, etc, but would not harm them in any way if one of them had a taste. AND, whatever I put out had to repell the mice and bugs completely.  Repell-em bags are perfect because they contain only safe, natural ingredients.

    Found it!

Repell-em products do the trick and they do it perfectly. Even if a cat ATE a piece of a Repell-em bag, it would not harm her. But since Repell-em bags repel animals, I don’t even have to worry about one of the cats touching the Repell-em bag or anything near the bag.

    It’s wonderful!

When you live out in the country, you come to expect a “visitor” or two, but with Repell-em bags, you only get the visitors you want. It’s true.

Oh, and by the way. . . “Weevily Wheat” is an old folk song. Really, it is. Look it up.

Or I could do that for you.

  • campsiteThis guy is camping in the woods, beside a big lake. The people in the campsite next to him are almost overcome with mosquitoes, and the raccoons and possums and squirrels are driving them insane.

This guy, however, is having no problems whatsoever with insects or animal pests.

The people in the campsite next to him have had to pick up their garbage every single morning, because no matter how “securely” they wrap it up and cover it, the insects and animals can smell the alluring scent of rancid hamburger and stale buns and wrappers with the scent of something yummy still emanating from them, and as soon as the sun goes down they go for it! And they rummage around and mess it up until they find what they smelled from a long way off. What a mess to wake up to.

But this guy wakes up to a pristine campsite. His trash bags are unmolested, even though he filled them with fish heads the night before.

The people in the next campsite wake up covered with mosquito bites every morning. They’ve tried everything: sprays, bracelets, little bug-be-gone pouches in their pockets, but nothing works for more than a few minutes.

Our guy wakes up completely bite-free every morning, and he stays that way even when he’s out in his boat on that beautiful lake, where every other fisherman is battling the bugs until it’s difficult to stay out on the water for very long without going insane.

What’s the difference between our guy and everybody else in this lovely state park? Nothing, really. His tent is pretty much the same as everybody else’s, his fishing gear is nothing exceptional, and he’s eating much the same kinds of food and throwing away the same kinds of garbage as all the other campers. Why isn’t he being eaten alive by bugs and why is every animal in the park giving his campsite a wide berth?

It’s because our guy is using Repell-em trash bags. He’s also got a Repell-em tent mat under his sleeping bag. When he goes out on the lake, he’s got little strips of Repell-em bags around his ankles and wrists. That’s all it takes to enjoy the great outdoors without having to deal with the great swarms of insects and the pesky hordes of hungry animals.

His campsite is as pristine as it looks. There are no bugs. There are no annoying hungry animals. He can set out his trash in Repell-em bags and leave them as long as he wishes; nothing will molest them.

    How great is that?

And, Repell-em trash bags will keep animals and insects away from your garage, your home, your deck, and your curbside, too. You’ll be the only guy on the block with intact trash on garbage day. The guys who ride the city truck and gather up trash will love you.

Need a great gift for a Boy/Girl Scout? How about a tent mat that repels insects and animals? I used to camp out a lot when I was in Scouts, and I loved it, all but the bugs. I would wake up in the morning covered with itchy mosquito bites, and that was bad enough, but the occasional spider bites and “mystery bites” were often painful. I hated those bugs. I also hated the raccoons and possums and squirrels, etc, that would sneak into the campsite and even inside my tent in the night and help themselves to my candy bars and marshmallows.

If I’d had a Repell-em tent mat, I could have enjoyed a great night’s sleep out in the great outdoors and I wouldn’t have had to worry about getting bitten and attacked by the wildlife while I slept. It would also have been a lot more comfortable than putting my sleeping bag down on the hard ground.

If you’ve got a child who is a Scout, think about ordering some Repell-em tent mats. If you are a Scout leader, do more than just think about it. Nobody likes to be eaten alive by insects, and nobody likes to toss and turn all night on lumpy ground. With a Repell-em tent mat, both problems are solved!

You can buy most Repell-em products at most large Cabela’s stores, or you can order them online.
