All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

There are a ton of new energy sources being explored to combat our dependence on oil. There’s corn based biofuel. Hemp based biofuel. People making fuel out of mushrooms and Turkey poop. Solar power is all the rage. It seems that every rockstar and celebrity from Willie Nelson to Linkin Park has their own brand of biofuel. Windmills are the latest fad and floating wind turbines along the coastlines are the next step. Though the alternatives are many the idea is the same, we’ve got to find cleaner, cheaper ways to obtain energy. It looks like some folks in Florida may have just found a tailor made way to cut their energy costs thanks to something they have plenty of….ocean waves.

From the guys over at Inhabitat comes a story about how researchers at the Florida based Center of Excellence in Ocean Energy Technology are developing a way to harness the power of ocean waves and turn it into electricity. By positioning underwater turbines in the middle of the Gulf Stream which then run to a buoy floating overhead, the countless gallons of water rushing by could potentially produce enough electricity to power the entire state.

According to Inhabtitat “installing all these turbines will take time and significant research, which is why the team is hard at work developing a considerably smaller prototype version that they hope will provide them with enough data to assess whether installing such a system will have an impact in the ocean current, and, just as importantly, all the sea life moving through the area.”
