It seems I’m all about the lists this week what with the Top 15 Green Movies Tuesday and these I found on a couple of sites today. The reason I’m doing another “list” post is because as I write this blog everyday and become more involved in the saving of planet Earth, I’m attempting to turn my own habits/life into a more eco-friendly one. So far it seems like a huge task, but like everything else it all comes down to baby steps.
First off we have a list featured on MSN that deals with going green on a budget. This one is great in the fact that many (myself included) tend to think that being environmentally conscious is a worth while cause, but on that is expensive to say the least.
- Think about why you want to buy green- Focus on why you want to change and if you are serious instead of buy hybrid cars or more efficient water heaters, try taking few trips and cutting back on hot water usage.
- Try to get the most for your money- Again as in before green products are great, but less in more when it comes to getting the most for your money. Energy usage does more damage to the planet than anything else. Unplugging appliances/electronics when not in use, switching to compact light bulbs, and hanging clothes on the line all help cut energy costs.
- Buy less often- Cut out disposable products and shoot for those items that can be used over and over again. Make quality and dependability your number one priority when it comes to spending. Even if you have to pay more, you will still save money in the long run due to the item not having to be replaced as often.
This next list was sent to me by a friend and offers some really great ideas on how to go green one baby step at a time:
- Focus on changing the habits of our neighbors and community first before trying to do anything on a large scale. Then once you have a nice group behind you move on to city projects
- Get Rid of the plastics take a non-disposible tote with you for groceries or anything else which might require something to be carried in.
- Look in your closet and try to find things that are made from organic material. If there’s nothing there, find out which retailers in your area sell organic clothes. Forget fashion and focus on quality
- Switch to green cleaning products.
- Bring a travel cup where ever you go thus eliminating those paper cups you are given at every restaurant and fast food joint
All in all there are some great ideas here, but the most important thing to get out of them is you can’t go green all at once. It’s a process that first takes thought as to what your habits are and how can they best be changed to fit a green lifestyle.
