Today’s story makes no sense what so ever other than showing yet another way the government has decided to line it’s pockets. It was announced this week that all those expecting a nice tax cut of $500 bucks this year better cash in by December 31st or they will just have to do without. CNN is reporting that the $500 consumer tax credit will expire on that date and as of yet there are no plans to extend this benefit for buying green. The credit was given to all those individuals that installed energy saving water heaters, appliances, furnaces, etc.
Now though again I think this is a step in the wrong direction, there are still things you can do to save some dough and not go bankrupt in your attempt to see cleaner alternatives. The $2,000 credit for those that purchase or make solar upgrades is not set to run out until December 31,2008. But even then why issue a deadly line on these types of programs?
Thankfully local governments all across the country are stepping up in hopes of picking up the slack and continue to save the environment (not to mention alleviate our dependence on foreign oil). Washington (the state not the capital) is giving residents a $1000 rebate towards the purchase of solar water heaters. Texas offers a 100% from capital deduction to those corporations that use solar water heat, solar thermal heat, and wind power. Nebraska is helping out with a production-based credit to anyone who produces energy through the use of wind, solar power, geothermal, fuel cells, methane gas, or hydropower. Maine is even offering up to $1150 in rebates for installing energy efficient heating equipment and another 50%-75% of the cost connected with weatherizing your home.
I understand that Uncle Sam is probably doing a ton to make take care of the planet and help those who want to go green to have the ability to do so, but why does it always have to be one step forward two steps back?
