I mentioned this story a few weeks ago and since then several new developments have taken place, so I though I would revisit the issue just to keep everyone up to date. As you know there is a massive pet food recall in effect and some are saying that as many as thousands of pets have been killed by the tainted food.
This week the recall was expanded to include food products that contain rice protein mixed with melamine. Melamine is often a key ingredient used in the making of wheat gluten which is then used to make pet food. Melamine is also used in combination with melamine resin to help create such products as plastics, countertops, fabrics, and flame retardants. So far companies such as Menu Foods, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, P&G Pet Care, Del Monte, Sunshine Mills, and Nestle Purina have all joined in the recall of over 100 different products.
In hopes of stopping the import of the dangerous pet food, the FDA has launched an embargo of all shipments from Chinese suppliers of the contaminated wheat gluten. Last week hearings were help by the U.S. senate in order to try and prevent continued contamination of pet products.
