U.S., Canada, And Denmark Race To Win Back The Artic From Mother Russia
Posted in Repell-emIt’s been a couple of weeks since I brought you the story of the Russian expedition to claim more of the Artic circle for their own uses. Again I’m amazed that we are actually talking about planting flags and conquering territories in the year 2007, but that’s what happens when 25% of the world’s oil is at stake. Yet here we are and that’s exactly what’s happening as the U.S, Canada, and Denmark race to the north in hopes of claiming the majority of the region.
The Russian’s started this recent frenzy by claiming that the continental shelf connecting to Siberia is actually longer than once thought. Hence a crew was sent and a flag was planted some 13,000 feet underwater symbolically screaming “Hand-ski Off-ski Our Oil-ski”. Next thing you know Canada decides to set up a shop at the North Passage , Denmark gathers up a team in the name of Greenland, and now the good ole U. S. of A. figures now’s a good time to kick off the artic mapping mission that they have been preparing for over the course of several years. Each country (other than Russia who is pretty straight forward when it comes to what they want in this case) is giving the same “no big deal” excuse for the flurry of recent activity. All sounding similar to that of voyage member Larry Mayer of the University Of New Hampshire “This cruise was planned for three years and we’ve had the earlier cruises; this is part of a long and ongoing program, not at all a direct response.” Of course not Larry. Do you really expect us to believe the fear of Russian laying claim to an estimated 25% of the world’s oil supply isn’t cause for us sending an “expedition” to “survey the area”?
What makes this forth coming fight for the north even more disturbing is that it wasn’t until the very recent past that subs could even reach the area, but due to the ice melting because of Global Warming (you knew I’d get that phrase in here somewhere today didn’t you?) it’s all hands on deck.
