All about the Repell-em garbage bags and tablecloths

Monday was a big day for the U.S. environment in that a couple projects geared towards saving the saving the planet and cutting back on energy costs received some much needed funding.

The Farmers Market Promotion Program received almost a million dollars in grants that will eventually end up helping local farmers. Here in Alabama there are Farmers Markets everywhere and honestly the grocery stores just can’t compete with the fresh produce you find there. Plus all the money goes to local families. AG Secretary Chuck Conner who announced a total of 23 grants that would be spread across 16 states made the funding public on Monday. “Farmers markets are increasingly becoming a larger and more integral part of our rural and urban communities. We support this community spirit that helps increase farmer revenues, and provides consumers with fresh, local farm products.” Arkansas, California, District Of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Washington will each be getting a slice of the funding pie.

The Change-a-Light, Change-The-World campaign was also kicked off by the Environmental Protection Agency. The program represents a major step by the U.S. to try and motivate the public to switch to energy efficient light bulbs. As you may know energy efficient bulbs use an amazing 75% less energy than your average bulbs plus they last forever without having to be changed. According to their stats the EPA says that if each household in the U.S. would simply switch one bulb in their house to an energy efficient one than over $600 million bucks could be saved a year. The campaign will even feature a 10 city bus tour and of course the bus will be using diesel to make it’s way across the country.
